Are you seeing any therapy clients in person?
No, online only. While my hometown is Greenville and my practice is based in South Carolina, a love of travel often has me in different states and currently residing in the Pacific Northwest region of the US.
Can you provide therapy for residents of other states?
No. I am licensed in the state of South Carolina therefore I can only see persons that are legal residents of South Carolina. While it doesn’t matter where I am, it does matter where you are.
Do you take insurance?
No. I would be considered an out-of-network provider by any insurance. I can provide what is called a 'Superbill' form if you’d like that you can send to your insurance company to file for possible out-of-network benefits. It's always a good idea to check with your insurance company in advance so you have an idea of any possible reimbursement rates that might help with related costs. Charges are due at time of service.
DISCLAIMER: When utilizing out of network insurance benefits, I will be required to provide a mental health diagnosis. This diagnosis does go on your health care record and brings limits to confidentiality.
Who do you work best with?
Clients that tend to be a good fit for me are those that are ready to get to work. They are not ambivalent about what they want and while they know it will likely be uncomfortable and challenging work, they also know that it will be worth it. Usually there is a specific moment in time they are aware of that changed them and contributed to present moment symptoms and they are tired of avoiding that pain and ready to step into their truth. Working with adults with unresolved childhood trauma is my jam!
Do you work with teens or couples?
Since moving to an entirely online practice I only work with the adult population individually, therefore I do not work with children, teens, couples, families, or the geriatric population. While some therapists are generalists and work with different ages and symptomology, I am specifically trained as a trauma therapist working with the adult population.
What do those letters after your name even mean?
As a University of South Carolina graduate my Master's Degree is in Social Work (MSW). After graduating my profession is required to take a state exam to become licensed, then becoming an LMSW. After two years of practice experience and supervision post licensing we are then required to sit for YET ANOTHER clinical exam in order to become independently licensed and do clinical practice in a private setting. I am also a Clinical Supervisor providing supervision to therapists in training for their independent license (LISW-CP/S).
In addition to my clinical social work education, I completed my EMDR Basic Training through Personal Transformation Institute with founder and developer of the SAFE approach, Deb Kennard. Afterwards, I worked 10 months towards the certification process to become a Certified EMDR Therapist, followed by a year and a half of being a consultant-in-training, assisting and consulting in EMDR basic trainings. Currently I am an EMDRIA Approved Consultant and Credit Provider, supporting other clinicians in gaining advance practice and expertise in utilizing EMDR. I have extensive training and practice in Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT), using an informed approach. I am also a former Certified Addictions Counselor (CAC). In the past I have presented to other professionals in areas of my specialties, teaching at the graduate level for the University of South Carolina, College of Social Work, and undergraduate level for Lander University, Department of Psychological Sciences and Human Services. I have worked in various clinical settings including private practice, acute psychiatric hospitalization with adults, intensive outpatient with adolescents and families, residential treatment with adolescents and families, foster care residential with adolescents and supervised visitation with children and families.
What is therapy like with you?
I’m pretty laid back so no need to feel anxious. It’s important to me that my clients feel comfortable coming as they are so I also model that. As more years pass of working only online my attire has become less business casual and more, well casual. Tending to the mind & body we both need be able to freely move about, even online. Professional blazers make an appearance less often than my t-shirts do so if you’re looking for someone with a more polished exterior I’m likely not a good fit.
How long does the therapy process last?
Since there is no one size fits all, the shortest answer is…as long as needed. Need being the key word. When you begin therapy, I am already thinking about you meeting your treatment goals and wrapping up. My job is for you not to need me! For some that could be very brief with EMDR Mini-Intensives and/or Adjunct EMDR, or for more complex histories that could require additional sessions. That said, if you’re looking for a therapist for long-term support I am likely not the best fit. Clients that need continued support that want to work briefly with me will need a local primary therapist. This works well with me being online and out of state to ensure you have the support you need. My goal-oriented approach is—let’s get you some skills so we can tend to what needs tending to and you can go live your best life. I primarily work with clients that already have a therapist and are referred to me for adjunct EMDR around specific areas they feel stuck or with clients that want to focus on a single incident in an intensive format.
Good Faith Estimate
As of January 1st, 2022, the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) instigated a new Federal rule to protect patients from unexpected medical bills and to increase transparency between health care clinicians and patients. In compliance with the No Surprises Act (H.R. 133), this requires all medical and mental health clinicians to give a “good faith estimate” (GFE) to patients estimating the cost of services and how long services may last. If we work together you will be provided a GFE. For questions or more information about your right to a Good Faith Estimate visit www.cms.gov/nosurprises or call (800) 368-1019.
